National AM-390

A true 50s gem direct from Japan. The National AM-390. A very unique mid-century look to this totally refurbished black and green AM/SW-only vacuum tube radio. The speaker grills are a bright green color. There are 2 speakers, but it is not true stereo...it is simply mono split between 2 speakers. Internally, this is similar of the "All-American 6" tube radio layout. This does have an internal metal chassis with point-to-point connections for the components. It wouldn't be long after this radio was made that solid-state would start to gain traction. If you do open the back you must be careful as vacuum tubes run hot and at very high voltages! This is considered a "hot" chassis radio. This means the internal chassis is electrified! All 6 tubes are original Matsushita branded tubes and were tested in a well calibrated Knight 600 tube-tester. This radio also has a magic-eye tube to indicate signal strength. It had a fair amount of life left in it and displays well. This radio arrived in fair shape, dirty, and had a very loud hum coming from the speaker when powered on. The main filter capacitor had failed and was replaced along with various other resistors and capacitors that are known to be bad or going bad after many decades of use. It tunes in AM (amplitude modulation) quite well and has been adjusted and aligned. It also can catch SW (shortwave) stations. Shortwave isn't used much anymore, however. It has 3 tone levels built into the on/off switch.

Restoration notes

Completely disassembled and cleaned. There are some scratches and scuffs on case. Main filter capacitor and all other capacitors/resistors replaced. Viewing window was cleaned and polished, but remains a little bit fogged. It is minor. 72 hour test of all features.
